“Ich bin kein Fotograf, ich fotografiere”, sagt Rolf Maria K. über sich selbst und nimmt damit eine klare Unterscheidung zwischen Beruf und Leidenschaft vor. Der Mann hinter der Linse, dessen Blick durch das Objektiv diese grandiosen Bilder ermöglicht hat,  zeigt auf seiner Webpage keine Aufträge für die Werbung, um dort ein Produkt in Szene zu setzen. Dafür aber treibt ihn die Sehnsucht an, das auf seinen Reisen Gesehene anderen Menschen zugänglich zu machen und sie an seiner Sicht teilhaben zu lassen.

“Wenn ich durch die Kamera schaue, dann werde ich eins mit mir”, sagt er und spricht dabei über einen glücklichen Moment für sich selbst, nicht über eine künstlerische Vision, die ihn antreibt. Rolf Maria K. ist ein Reisender, ein Beobachter, aber kein Darsteller, kein selbsternannter Künstler.

Beruflich war er 30 Jahre für einen großen deutschen Konzern tätig, der ihn davon 15 Jahre im Ausland einsetze. Rolf Maria K. lebte und arbeitete in Asien, in Afrika und dem Mittleren Osten und lernte so die Welt kennen, persönlich, direkt und intensiv. Sein Blick auf die verschiedenen Kulturen der Länder ist nicht der eines Touristen, der eines Besuchers. Vielmehr erlaubt es seine Erfahrung im Mosaik der Kulturen, von den Menschen als ‘Freund’ angesehen und in ihr Leben eingeladen zu werden. Er ist der Nachbar, der zu Besuch kommt und für eine Zeit das Leben mit uns teilt.

Am Anfang steht immer die Reise. Um die Kultur in einem Land kennen zu lernen, sie zu verstehen und Kontakt mit ihr zu erlangen. Der Blick durch das Objektiv ist die Sehnsucht, dieses Verstehen umzusetzen. Den Augenblick der Freiheit festzuhalten – so widersprüchlich dies auch klingen mag. Und das Bild ist dann ein Moment auf der Reise, eine Erinnerung an die Situation, die es hervorgebracht hat. Es sind die Kleinigkeiten, die Details, die Bruchteile einer Sekunde, die ein bemerkenswertes von einem gewöhnlichen Bild trennen. Es ist der Mönch, der durch Zufall gerade sein Gebet beendet und aufsteht und so durch sein farbiges Gewand einen dramatischen Punkt im grau des alt-ehrwürdigen Tempels setzt . Es ist der Winkel der Sonne, der hinter den spielenden Kindern, diese in Silhouette taucht, und so ihre Bewegung und Energie im Kontrast festhält.

Die Bilder sind persönliche Momente, hinter ihnen stehen individuelle Erfahrungen und Situationen auf den vielen Reisen von Rolf Maria K.  Doch die Einzigartigkeit der Momente, die in ihnen dargestellt sind, inspirieren uns, weit über das persönliche Erinnern hinaus. Wir waren nicht dort, wir haben den Moment nicht erlebt – dennoch scheint etwas aus dem Moment uns anzusprechen, uns zu berühren. Die Bilder vermitteln Emotionen, Gedanken, Situationen und wir sehen in ihnen einen Eindruck des Lebens. Diese Art zu reisen bietet einen anderen Blick, ein anderes Bild – einen Spiegel des Lebens.

BEHIND THE LENS

 

“I am not a photographer, but I do take pictures,” says Rolf Maria K. about himself and clearly distinguishes between the profession and passion of photography. The person behind the lens, whose perceptive viewpoint allows for grand images such as these here does not show any product advertising  for the corporate world on his webpage. On the contrary, his sole purpose, when beginning a travel and taking these images, is to make available his passionate view of things and to allow others to participate in his perspective on the world as a whole.

“When I view the world through my camera, I become whole and feel fulfilled with and of myself,” he says and refers not to an artistic vision or creative drive but rather to that simple and heartfelt emotion of happiness in and of oneself. Rolf Maria K. is a traveller, an on-looker, not an acting agent with a mission. And he is especially not a self-proclaimed artist.

For 30 years of his professional life he has been employed by a large German corporation, for which he has been working almost 15 years in foreign countries as a liaison. He has lived and breathed Asian, African and Middle Eastern life, has learned so much about diverse cultures – directly, personally and intensively. He is no tourist to these parts of the world, no visitor for a fortnight, no passer-through. When he travels, he becomes part of the rich tapestry of the country, a piece in the mosaic of the culture. He engages the people, becomes friend or neighbor. He is an old acquaintance returning from long travels and sharing their life for a little while – and thus being able to share it with us, too.

The journey is the means by which we encounter another culture and country and through which we establish contact. The photographic image is at the center of our longing to understand the foreign, to learn about the other. It is the blink of an eye, in which complete freedom and eternal capture rest at the same time, as contradictory both aspects may seem. The image represents a moment on our journey, remembrance of a situation that has produced it. Life can be found, and the eternal difference between ordinary and exceptional located, in the smallest detail, in the minute difference of angle and the exact moment in time. The right moment, when a monk rising from his early morning prayer invests the stone-gray surrounding of the temple with his vividly colorful robe. The exact point of view, when the sun envelopes children on a swing at just the right angle to reveal strong energy in motion as their forms contrast with the light in silhouette.

These images are personal moments, each of them representing unique experiences and situations on Rolf Maria K.’s journeys. But their uniqueness is inspiring – in them is a spirit, which goes beyond their relative moment, beyond personal memory. We might not have been there, might not have lived that moment, but we are touched by the images nonetheless, are transported into that moment. They exude emotion and inspire thought. In them we see an impression of life itself. They offer a different view, a different image of the world – a mirror of life.
